Sorbet Recall Update As FDA Sets Highest Risk Level

A sorbet-filled mochi recalled due to an undeclared allergen has been given the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s highest risk level. The My Mochi Ice Cream Company of Vernon, California, recalled 1,350 cases of the peach mango–flavored dessert after it was discovered the products may contain pasteurized cooked egg white not listed on the packaging. "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products," the firm cautioned in a statement. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 8 percent of American children and some 6 percent of adults have at least one form of food allergy. Two cases of minor allergic responses to eating the ice cream were reported earlier this month.

The affected peach mango sorbet mochi products were recalled on January 6. Mochi is a confection made from ice cream or sorbet wrapped in a pounded sticky rice shell. On January 28, the FDA assigned the recall a Class I risk level, meaning that "there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." The affected run of products were sold in the freezer sections of retail stores—including both Wegmans and Target— in an orange, six 1.25 oz container box weighing 7.5 oz in total. Those concerned that they may have purchased the sorbet mochi can identify it from the lot codes marked on the box: 337-24 and 341-24. The affected products also have the universal product code (UPC) 0-70934-99868-1—and use-by dates between December 2–6, 2025. According to the My Mochi Ice Cream Company, the issue with the product labeling was traced, after an investigation, to a "temporary breakdown" in the firm's packaging processes. "Consumers who have purchased My Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet with lots 337-24 & 341-24 are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund," the My Mochi Ice Cream Company added. Consumers with questions about the recall are encouraged to contact the firm at 1-844-696-6244. Newsweek has reached out to the My Mochi Ice Cream Company for comment.
