Mom Checks Daughter's Baby Cam, 'Couldn't Believe' What She Hears

An Illinois mom checking in on her daughter via their baby cam was left stunned at what she heard. Meagan Cope from Chicago had only just put her daughter to bed when she heard something that had her rushing to check. It was the sound of her toddler daughter singing the Chappell Roan hit "Hot To Go" at the top of her lungs. "I was singing the song to my daughter one night before bed, and when I put her down and left her room I heard her singing it back to herself," Cope told Newsweek. While it's not uncommon for young kids to pick up songs and phrases they hear their parents sing or say, there was something about this particular instance that Cope found unusual. "I had only played 'Hot to Go' to her twice, for the first time that evening, so when she first started singing it in her crib I couldn't believe it," she said. There could be a scientific explanation behind this. In 2013, a study published in the journal PloS One highlighted how babies were capable of remembering melodies played to them in the womb. The research, involving 24 women in the final few months of pregnancy, saw half listen to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" for five days a week, while the other half abstained. After birth, the babies listened to the same song. Based on a measurement of brain activity, the researchers identified a noticeably stronger reaction to the song among those babies who heard the song in the womb. Could Cope's daughter have picked up the song that way? Cope isn't so sure.
"I think she picks up on remembering things similar to most kids, but she does especially love songs," she said. "She really picked up on spelling it out right away—she's learning her letters at school so I think she gravitated towards the song." Nevertheless, Cope was eager to record it so she could share it with family members. She's since shared it to TikTok under the handle meagan.cope. The video has been watched over 650,000 times with viewers enthralled at her daughter's rendition. "This wins the internet. Everybody, time to go home," one commented. "I love hearing kids interpretations of songs," another wrote with a third adding: "Currently listening to my toddler singing Hot To Go from her bed as well." Though the child may have only heard it a couple of times before this particular performance, Cope has revealed how that has very much changed now. "She has us sing certain songs to her every night," she said. "Now in addition to her regular songs she has started requesting 'Hot to Go.'" She hasn't ruled out her daughter becoming a Chappell Roan superfan in the future either. "I would love to take my daughter to see Chappell Roan one day," Cope said. "I like to think Chappell has secretly seen the video."
