Reason Mom Apologizes to Friends Who Became Parents Before She Did

Bestselling author Gabrielle Stone has told Newsweek she didn't realize parenthood is "so much more than a full-time job," after making a "formal apology" on TikTok this week to all the moms who came before her. "My husband and I are toast by the end of the day between parenting and work, and to my stay-at-home moms I applaud you," the mom of one said.

In the TikTok video (which has amassed over 350k views), Stone, from Los Angeles, California, explains: "For any of my friends that were moms before I was a mom, I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry, I just didn't know. "I didn't know when I was like, 'it's fine, come to the bachelorette party, like get a babysitter' or 'just put the baby down and then come out to dinner'. It's 7:30 at night." Stone (@gabrielle_stone on TikTok) captioned the video: No I don't want to go to your event past 7 p.m. it's bedtime routine and sleep bro, which attracted other TikTok users to share their preconceptions before becoming parents. One wrote "My friend told me she would want to have at least a part-time job during mat leave so she 'has something to do when the baby naps'." Meanwhile another admitted to apologizing to a friend and co-worker when she used to say she was tired as a child-free person when they had two children under two years old. Others thanked Stone for her formal apology, as one TikTok user commented: "Most of my friends do not have little kids like me and do not understand. It's hard to explain because my single friends with no kids think it's simple." Some days, you'll think you've cracked motherhood but you'll be going through the trenches on others, as one TikTok user said "I wish more people acknowledged this! It's tough out there." Stone told Newsweek: "Now after attending a bachelorette party, birthday dinners and different events, there is nothing I want more than to have a glass of wine, watch a show, and go to bed by 8 p.m." To close out the TikTok video, Stone said to her friends who became moms before her "You're doing great."
