A video of a man's heartwarming attempt to make a dog feel better has gone viral on TikTok.
The video was shared by @finieh and has had over 558,000 views since it was posted on Sunday.
A message overlaid on the clip says: "My bf[boyfriend] tried to make my dog feel better about having to wear a cone by getting in the cone with him so he wouldn't have to go through it alone."
The footage shows a man sitting with a dog wearing a cone, which is known as an Elizabethan collar. The device is placed over a canine's head to keep them from touching an injured part of its body or a surgical site since it's natural for dogs to lick their wounds.
The man in the clip is seen with his head inside the cone. He is shown rubbing the dog's leg while leaning his head against the side of the pup's head inside the cone.
The scene in the latest viral post comes as no surprise because the relationship between adult dogs and their owners "bears a remarkable resemblance to an infant attachment bond," according to a May 2013 study published in PLOS One. "Dogs are dependent on human care and their behavior seems specifically geared to engage their owners' care-giving system," the study said.
Your Dog Wearing a Cone
Our canine companions tend to resent wearing an Elizabethan collar and may get frightened or upset after they bang into objects while wearing it. However, most do get used to the collar after a few hours, noted veterinarians Courtney Barnes, Ryan Llera and Ernest Ward in an article for VCA, one of North America's largest hospital chains.
Owners can help their dog transition into wearing it by keeping their pet confined to a space where there are no items that would move if knocked over, such as stools, chairs and tables. The collar restricts the dog's vision from the sides, making it difficult for many to walk in tight or narrow spaces, so it's important to help them as much as possible, the veterinarians advised.
It's also important to supervise your dog during the first few hours of wearing it to be sure it doesn't hurt itself by trying to remove it, such as by getting a paw stuck in the collar, they added.
