Millions Watch as Man Releasing Healed Animal Back Into the Wild Backfires

A man's attempt to release a pigeon back into the wild after it recovered from being shot backfired spectacularly in an embarrassing moment that has since been watched by millions. In a hilarious viral video uploaded to TikTok on November 5, Kayla Tucker—who goes by the username kaylatuker—explained she and her partner cared for an injured pigeon. But when it came to finally releasing the bird, the pigeon flew from her partner's hands and went back inside without a second thought as if it was comfortable with the new arrangement. "The pigeon was shot with an airsoft rifle but survived," Tucker said. "She couldn't fly and had a bad wound so we rescued her and after a couple of months the vet cleared her but also said she might not leave. "So we let her go today and this happened. We will try again in hopes she will go but today she made it obvious she doesn't want to leave. I thought for sure she would just fly away." Airsoft guns are replica toy guns that are typically used in airsoft sports, do not use bullets and have low muzzle energy ratings, making them less powerful than air guns. The video shows the pigeon flying just a few feet before landing outside the couple's door and wandering inside, ignoring an astonished dog. The TikToker later clarified that the couple is now "keeping the pigeon. She lives with us now." Newsweek has contacted kaylatuker for comment via TikTok.

Releasing Animals Back to the Wild

According to the U.K.'s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, there are several things people should consider when releasing an animal back into the wild, which include:
  • Timing the release carefully by avoiding difficult weather conditions, allowing time for the animal to heal, and considering the time of day if they are nocturnal.
  • Consider the best location and release them back to where they were found as they might hold territory in the area or be part of a family group. They may also know where to take shelter in the location.
  • Think about nearby dangers it could face such as roads and the types of animals around.

Online Reaction to Video

The clip has been viewed more than 3.9 million times and received an estimated 586,400 likes since it was uploaded to TikTok. Many of those who commented on the post believed it was inevitable that the pigeon would be a long-term lodger at the house. TikTok user maggie rose said: "Good luck. My cousins have had an accidental pet pigeon for like 10 years." Madrona added: "Pigeons are feral pets more than they are wild birds. You have a pet pigeon now." Jeanie commented: "I'm right there with you. Rescued a baby squirrel after storm and now he is glued to me 24/7 lol (laugh out loud)." While Demon-Cosplay posted: "She was pampered, would you want to leave after that?"
